Budget Cuts Threaten the Future of Cancer Research
The president's final budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2026 slashes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ budget by 25.2 percent overall, and cuts funding for the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute by 40.4 percent and 37.2 percent, respectively. These drastic budget cuts will have devastating consequences for millions of Americans.

Joann B. Sweasy, PhD
An internationally recognized expert in the genetics, cell biology, and biochemistry of DNA repair, Dr. Joann B. Sweasy is director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases. Dr. Sweasy is deeply committed to engaging rural and other underserved communities; preparing the next generation of researchers; fostering bidirectional translation; and optimizing the role of the cancer center within the academic and clinical organizational structures.

Rural Cancer Health Initiative
The AACI Presidential Initiative allows the president of AACI's Board of Directors to formalize a special project of broad interest and value to AACI members during their two-year term. Dr. Sweasy's presidential initiative aims to confront the national crisis in rural cancer health by identifying and addressing critical areas of need.
